23rd June ’19 – Dalby 3 bowl triples.
Arm Bowlers Head off “West of the Divide”
Once again Dalby hosted a weekend of Social and Competition games for Arm Bowlers with visitors from Roma, Hervey Bay, Kawana, Manly, Brisbane area, Gold Coast area, Canungra, Toowoomba, Summit, Kilarney and Sydney. With non-Arm Bowlers playing Lead this allowed for husbands and wives to join in.
The weather was gifted by request for the weekend, with cold brisk mornings and warm sunshine for the remainder. The Dalby area is desperate for rain but just not for the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of June.
Saturday 22nd was a Social day for visitors to come and mingle and have a social game with the locals. A BBQ was held after play, if a win on the green was not for you, there were plenty of raffles to vie for.
Sunday was a brisk cold morning and play started on time with 20 teams hitting the greens looking to have a slice of the pot of gold at the end. Three games were played with varying results, some good and some not so good. I would like at this time to congratulate the team of Jason Bray, Mark Morrison and non-arm bowler Val Dun, for giving all their hearts into the first game and giving their opponents a right royal scare, only going down by two points. Mark has Cerebral Palsy and plays from a wheelchair.
Results for the day were easy to work out until there were teams on the same scores and count backs had to start. Two teams were on the same scores for two count backs and only divided on the third count back.
First prize went to the team from North Toowoomba skipped by Mick Cherry. Second prize went to a Dalby team skipped by Richard Witte and again Lindsey Halling was overcome with wonder at his win. Third prize was taken by the team skipped by Roger Goodridge from Broadbeach. Fourth went to the team from Oakey skipped by Paddy Boyton and finally was the Fifth team skipped by John McGahan.
Round winners were the teams skipped by Barry French, David Johnson and Harold Coggan.
Every club in any avenue knows that without sponsors Carnivals cannot be held with success. It is with grace and respect for the Sponsors of this weekend, that the Dalby Club wishes to thank all Sponsors who gave willingly, either with donations for raffles or with financial gifts, for their support was the main reason the weekend was such a great success.
Written by Juliana McGahan ( Sincere thanks Juliana!)

14 April ’19 – Kawana Pairs
Great weather for the event, and our Greens were running fairly well considering all the rain we have had leading up to our day.
We received many compliments for our handling of the day. Our greens and the lunch provided, together with the fellowship and camaraderie amongst those who attended.
We had 24 teams of players from Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Hervey Bay and Bargara, Gold Coast, Toowoomba and Dalby, and thanks to all those who played and then had up to three and a half hours drive to get home.
Most of these players attend other MABA games which are played throughout our State, and do not seem to mind the fact that they have to travel fairly long distances.
They always have a great time whether or not they are winners, and we appreciate having their attendance at Club Kawana.
Our winners on the day were Brian Barrett and Pat Hannon from Belmont in Brisbane. Runners up were a local pairing of Jenny Edwards from Kawana and Bob Rowley from Caloundra.
Winners of the losers were David Johnson and Cheryl Hutchinson from the Gold Coast, and the runners up, another local pairing, James Hope from Nambour and Manfred Franklin from Kawana.
Congratulations to all winners, and we trust all players had a great time.
(Thanks Geoff. Cooper for this report.)

10 December ’18
MABA members had a great day out at Manly on 10/12/18 where Lynn Gilbert and Val ran a smooth day with 56 players enjoying the carpet under cover. Luckily the heat wave from last week was gone and a light sea- breeze kept every-one happy and comfortable.
The Xmas theme ran through to several participants dressing down for the day and added a few moments of humour.
Winners of the costumes for the day were the twins from Wide Bay, Sproson and Kingham. Those flowing red beards did the trick!
Lynn Gilbert (L) with Frank Farrell and Leanne and Geoff Geary with his Mooloolaba club mate Carol Azzopardi returned a 4 + 32 margin for the day but were pipped by 1 shot for the win and runner up purse and alas had to settle for a Round 1 win.
Frank Farrell and A. Sayar won Round 2 with a margin of 15.
Runners Up Ron Schofield and Vic Garra also on 4 +33 collected their prize from Bayside Bowls Sponsor Leanne and APIA ‘s David Johnson.
Bramley and G. Wood from Tweed Heads won on a count back with 4 + 33 and received their rewards from APIA Ins. Rep. David Johnson.
Nothing beats Manly’s lunch but you have to be nimble to avoid the rush!
After the first 16 ends of 2X4X2 pairs we all hit the dining room for a great Xmas Lunch put on by the Marlins kitchen and MABA.
What a fabulous day, what fabulous costumes!
Sincere thanks to Geoff Geary for the photo and story.
19 November ’18
BIG WEEKEND ON SUNSHINE COAST.
Following on from Kawana’s Arm Day on Sunday where MABA members and friends played 2 games of pairs on the grass, then held their AGM most players joined local stick swingers at Mooloolaba to contest 4 games of 8 ends of 3 bowl Pairs on the fast and wide carpet. First time we have played this format and the response from players ensures it won’t be the last. Open draw/wins plus margins/no dead ends. 22 teams entered however some last minute health problems meant that 4 spouses were called upon to fill the gaps. Many thanks to those folk, as I hate redoing cards and boards!
Thanks to all the members who helped run the event smoothly, selling raffle tickets, writing results up and helping with the lunch. Neil Henricks and Alan Barber were Grade A1 Cooks and the steaks were superb. Mooloolaba ladies were wonderful, as usual, with supervising lunch and doing the cleaning up.
The games were all finished ahead of schedule and after the popular raffle prizes were claimed our No 1 Sponsor from APIA, Suzi, was on hand to present the prizes for the event. Winners were the Bargara Boys Alan Arnold and Alan Eversham. Runners Up were also from the Rum City area, Graeme Tickle and John Watkins. Third spot was claimed by local whiz Carol Azzopardi and Gold Coast’s Ron Schofield. Dalby Duo, Gordon and Wendy Usher won the Highest Margin for round 4 .
Thanks to our Sponsors APIA, Bowlers Paradise, IGA Wises Road, Bob McClintoff and Club Mooloolaba. (Sincere thanks to Geoff. Geary for this report.)

Club Chermside hosted 56 M.A.B.A. members on Monday 30th July and many thanks go to Col Ware, the Club staff and its members, who were on hand to cater for our day. Greens were running well; the sun was shining and the breeze wasn’t a problem. The format was “winners play winners” and the first game of 3 bowls pairs was followed by lunch. After lunch it was 14 ends of a 2X4X2 game.
The Clayfield AVEO retirement village in Albion sponsored the event and Mark Montague was on hand for the presentations. Great to hear from him and we were all very impressed with his presentation.
Winners were Lee Newing and Ralph Hunt with a small margin from Runners Up Roger Goodridge and Heather Hodgson. (Thanks, Geoff Geary for this report)

Pine Rivers Armed Pairs – Monday 28th Nov ’16
The Pine Rivers Club, and the Maroon Arm Bowlers, supported by sponsors Quoll Medical put on a great arm bowler’s pairs tournament last Monday (28th Nov. ’16). There were 26 teams in attendance, a very good turn up!
The pre-lunch game format was 15 ends of 3 bowl pairs commencing at 10am and the afternoon format was 15 ends of 2X4X2 commencing at 12.30pm. Both games were subject “to the bell”, which keeps things moving along, and ensures that all get to enjoy their beautiful BBQ lunch at the same time and at the right temperature.
John Ackfield, was the representative of Quoll Medical Pendants, and he was there to present the prize-money to all winners, as below:
Best first game winners with a +15 were W. Banner and A. Pou.
Best second winners with a +16 were D. Bristow and A. Hunter.
Runner’s up with a +4 & a +18 were S. Dunbar and J. McGahan.
Winner’s with a +20 & a +15 were C. Ingham and L. Hewish.
The old adage “you win some, you lose some” would be much appreciated by W. Banner and A. Pou whose winning margin in the first, was also their downfall in the second. A free day out however!
Well done to all competitors and organisers on the running of this very successful tournament.
Kawana Armed Pairs – Sunday 13th Nov ‘16
WOW! What a great day we had at Club Kawana on Sunday 13th November, for our annual Arm Bowlers pairs day. The competition was hot as was the weather, but no rain or storm to interrupt our games, thankfully.
Altogether we had a near capacity field of 26 teams, and many of these players travelled many kilometers to take part. We are finding that our Maroon Arm Bowling members are prepared to take the time to get to our events, as great times are experienced and we now have the Events and prize money, together with the opportunity to be selected and represent Queensland in the Annual National Tournament, to encourage participation.
This augers well for the many players who are handicapped in some capacity, to have our own events where everyone can compete hopefully without pain and suffering, and enjoy the friendliness that is part of our members make up.
We had players from as far north as Mt Larcom, Bundaberg, Bargara and Hervey Bay, from Tweed Heads and the Gold Coast to the south, and Laidley and Dalby out west. Also, it was great to see players from various Brisbane clubs as well.
Thank you to all of you for taking the time to come to our event, and make it the great day that is was.
We look forward to seeing each of you at our various and increasing events at different locations throughout Queensland during the next 12 months, and for those who are unaware, there is usually at least one event each month, and it won’t be long before there are several monthly events as our member number increase, which it is rapidly doing.
The attached photos show our:
Winners for the day…………Geoff. Geary and Alain Menanteau from Mooloolaba, and
Runners Up……………… Karen and Garry Parker from Pialba (Hervey Bay)(Won on a count-back, with 1 more end won than Peter Tappenden, Mt. Larcom, and John McGahan, Dalby.)
Also shown is our major sponsor, Jason Currie from www. lawnbowls2you.com presenting the winners their money vouchers.
Club Kawana was our other major sponsor, and we thank them together with Jason for helping us to make this day possible.
We also thank Ray Malcolm from Club Kawana. Ray helped organise everything on the day, and we are grateful for his all-day effort helping to run things. Thank you Ray.
Other winners on the day were:
Highest margin, Game 1…… Lyn. Gilbert, Capalaba, and Frank Farrall, Belmont. (Both Brisbane Clubs)
Highest margin, Game 2…… Geoff. Savill and George Truscott also from Pialba.
Here on the Sunshine Coast, we are looking for more Clubs to host an Arm Bowling event for our local arm bowlers. Contact Geoff. or Bill at Club Kawana, and we will help you to promote the event, as we have many arm bowlers in our district looking for competition against other arm bowlers. Next year we hope to have inter-district competitions as our membership grows Queensland wide.
Until next time,
Geoff. Cooper and Bill Roberts.
P. S. Kawana is excited to announce the return of Ian ‘Shoey’ Schuback to Club Kawana. Shoey will be starting back at Club Kawana on Monday the 21st of November as Head Coach. He is wasting no time, announcing training days this morning. Training for next week will be as follows;
Wednesday the 23rd 1-3pm Ladies Training
Wednesday the 23rd 3-5pm Men’s Training
Friday the 25th 5pm PREMIER LEAGUE TRAINING (For people who expressed interest in Premier League)

Mooloolaba Armed Bowlers Challenge Pairs 24 Sep ’16
Twenty-two teams of arm bowlers got together at Mooloolaba on the 24th of September. Half of them were locals or from neighbouring clubs, the other half travelled up to 300 plus kilometres to play for a cut of the $600 prize-money.
That is a bit like driving from Melbourne to Moama for a couple of games of bowls , so as you can imagine the Club was stoked with the support. Mooloolaba has two greens of carpet under a roof and they run fairly wide and fast so local knowledge was balanced by a practice session while teams registered and settled in.
After the group photo the first game of 18 ends of 3 bowl pairs got away on time and though one team wasn’t able to attend Barry Smith and Doug Carlos were on hand as spare players and were able to make the numbers even. Thank-you fellows . All teams were able to complete the game before lunch and the afternoon game of 2 hours of 15 x 2/4/2 pairs got started on time .
The clock beat a lot of us by a couple of ends but while the cards were being scored the 16 draws for the raffle got under way. Thanks to Bowlers Paradise, the Club, Carol , Gail ,Mary and the many others who donated. Jean McDougal sold the tickets for the Club and did a great job.
Sponsors were Mark Stringer from Helm Financial Services , Gillian Connors of Ucango Travel , Debra Crichton of My Hair Lounge and Steve from JERMYN property maintenance. A big vote of thanks to them all for their support and Debra and Steve were on hand to present the prizes.
Two game winners and the highest margin in the second game went to Garry Searle from Urangan and Rodger Goodrich from Broadbeach with a +19.
Runners up were two local bowlers Jack Burge and Eric Skellern who put together a +15 .
Third was presented to the highest margin in the second game from a loser in the first and Buderim member Alain Menanteau joined Urangan based Leon Dwyer for the money with a +11.
Fourth was for the high margin in the first game and Mooloolaba’s Richard Knopke and Geoff Geary were in the running there with +18.
Luck draw was won by two local Caloundra ladies Rena Williams and Irma Bashford who held their own against a couple of good men’s teams and scored a +1 and a +4 and enjoyed their first arm bowlers carnival and hopefully will be attending more in the near future.
Overall it was a very successful day and several new arm bowlers were interested in joining up.
(What a fabulous report from organizer Geoff Geary! Thanks Geoff -Ed.)

Bundaberg Ladies Open Triples 19 Jun ’16
The running of this event was tenuous for a time, as predicted rain and thunderstorms threatened its cancellation right up to decision time Saturday morning. The brave and committed Bundaberg Ladies Committee failed to buckle on this news however, and gave the green light to continue with the event, their first endeavour at holding an Armed Bowlers Tournament. What a success it was, in putting Bundy on the Armed Bowlers itinerary, and promoting goodwill.
Alas the heavens did intervene though as Tournament Organizer Kay Ole stated “We had a great half day then the heavens opened, but I’m sure everyone enjoyed it. We had positive feedback and as a result the Match Committee are very happy.”
Victorian, Ann Power of the City of Frankston Club was in the Winners Rink and provides this snapshot on play.
“The organizers and players at the tournament gave us a very warm welcome, and gave us the name of ‘the 3 Armigos (yes…yet another play on arms – ED.) from down south’.
We managed to get the first game played but after lunch we only played 1 end and the rain came down, the green was totally under water. Winners were chosen from the first game results. There were 12 teams in attendance, with about 5 or 6 hand bowlers.
A gentleman from Ipswich Maroons Club and also 3 bowlers from Urangan spoke regarding the upcoming Nationals at Broadbeach. A set of bowls is being raffled to raise money for Qld’s Armed Squad and will be drawn at the Nationals, I think.
The ladies in the kitchen served up lovely homemade soup, pumpkin, chicken & corn and vegie soup, followed by a selection of toasted sandwiches.
We had the best apple slices and home cooked goodies for afternoon tea.
It was a very well run event just a pity about the weather.
Next year they are thinking about changing the date for the event as there were so many other games being played in the area. It was a lovely day and we were made to feel very special.”
Rd 1 Winners (“Best first game” to others) were: Presented by from left in the photos, President Carol Marcinkus of the Bundaberg Ladies Bowling Club & Andrew Orr representing Q’ld Maroon Armed Bowlers to the winners Gloria Browning, R. Davey and Herb Smith all from Bundaberg.
Runners up Presented by Andrew Orr. (In black) He represented the Q’ld Maroon Armed Bowlers. Runners up from left, Gail Karron from Urangan, Hilda Schmidt from Bundaberg, and Dave Mitchell from Bundaberg.
The Winners A snap of the “Three Armigos” from Victoria with the Match Committee. From left, Kay Ole, President Carol Marcinkus and Barbara Elworthy with the Winners: Ann Power, Bob Ormesher & John Cobden (all from City of Frankston).
Special Thanks to Kay Ole and Ann Power for photos and content.
